In the NewsPecanwood Golf Day 2026
HAWS Golf Day held on Friday 22nd May was a wonderful success and greatly enjoyed by all who attended.
There was plenty of laughter and fun throughout the day — especially when one unlucky golfer, after a disastrous tee shot, was required to drop his pants before taking his next shot! Don’t worry… his identity will remain safely protected! ![]()
We would firstly like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Pecanwood Golf Club for hosting such a fantastic event and for making everyone feel so welcome.
A very special thank you also goes to the Rotary Club of Brits- Hartbeespoort. Without their incredible support and assistance, HAWS would have found it extremely difficult to organise such a successful day.
Thank you so much to musician Andre Fischer for generously donating his time and talent to entertain everyone at the after-game dinner. Your music added such a wonderful atmosphere to the evening.
A big thank you as well to HAWS treasurer, Gill Spalding, for co-organising the event alongside Rotary, and to the dedicated HAWS staff and volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the day run so smoothly.
To all the players, hole sponsors, and the prize and gift donors — thank you for your generosity, enthusiasm, and support. You all made the event such a fun, memorable, and fabulous experience for everyone involved.
We are truly grateful for all the kindness and care shown towards HAWS. Your support enables us to continue doing our very best for the animals who continue to come into our care every single day.

About the Filmmaker:
Hermien Roelvert-van Gils spent months filming with the team on the ground to capture the events to bring you this intimate and heartfelt story of the Diary of an Elephant Orphan but now she occassionally visits HAWS and captures stories from our shelter.
Please support her but subscribing to her channel and watching our stories.
Thank you Hermien!
Let’s find this youngster a home! This dog – who was brought to the dog shelter because his owners felt he dug too much and chew too much, ended up being very afraid of humans. After Cassy, a volunteer worked with him, this young dog made a 180 degree turn and is almost himself again… and then he got adopted… or so we thought…
Consider volunteering this festive season at your local animal shelter. All animals need our love and crazy things happen over the holiday seasons. Animal shelters like HAWS (Harties animal welfare society) are inundated with cats and dogs and there is not enough staff to give every animal some personal time – weather that is grooming, playing, walking or even reading stories to – you decide 🙂
Little Dobby the bush baby that was brought to Ilka is growing 1 gram a day! But he eats every 4 hours! 🙂 Ilka is talking to rehab centres so soon he will go off to be rehabilitated and hopefully released. In the mean time – watch his favourite sleeping spot – Ilka’s pocket 🙂
Little Bush baby Dobby is off to the Joburg wildlife vets who will see to his rehabilitation. But Ilka is sad to see him go. We all are – but we know his survival is most important. Go well little Dobby 🙂
I completed my elephant documentary after 7 intense but special years, so now I need something else to film and contribute towards. So I looked around in my own community (I drove over 22 000km for the elephant documentary and something closer would be wise:) and landed on HAWS – an animal shelter for unwanted cats and dogs. And in the first episode I filmed, I fell in love with Rex. You will see why! A big dog that arrived as just skin and bones. Dr Kate and Ilka decided to give Rex a chance… as he was brought in to the clinic to be euthanised. See what HAWS do by visiting them on www.haw-s.co.za There are many good people in the world – these folks are part of those!
Rex the emaciated dog is eating! But it’s a long road to recovery for him. Kittens from a feral mom is groomed for adoption and a power-breed dog is rescued.
Dearest Rex is holding on (barely)… but some days are worse than others (please send your prayers). Then we investigate a tip off about someone mistreating his dogs, we see goats walking in… and the pup who was scared of humans… well, see for yourself! All you need is love…
Thank you to all who are part of this community, who donated and who support on the ground. We keep on fighting
